If I could undo one event from this past week...

I'm pretty sure it would be my reaction to the kids present that they got me for Christmas. I don't know what I was expecting from  them but it sure as heck wasn't the Panini Grill or the Sandwich maker that I received. My husband tells me that my face was not the one of surprise or happiness as the kids had hoped (they looked for three hours to find me "just the right thing" and this is what their precious, loving, little head came up with. I've told them time and time again that I fail at making grilled cheese sandwiches and that's why we don't have them as often as they might like, so of course they take it to heart and go out and persuade Daddy to help them pick out something that will "help" Mommy. So I owe them an apology:

My dear babies--Mommy is so sorry that she didn't jump up in rapturous joy at your present. I love it, I really do. You guys picked the perfect color (Metallic red!!) and Mommy really likes how happy you guys are when  I make you a sandwich on it. I'll try harder next time to have the appropriate reaction on my face, I promise.

Is the reason I haven't posted in such a long time. I've been busy over there, but I promise to be here more often.

JFK anniversary

Forty-five years ago, on Nov. 22, 1963, at exactly 12:30 p.m., the
course of American history was forever changed when shots rang out in
Dealey Plaza on the western edge of downtown Dallas.President
John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was struck
multiple times as he rode in a motorcade through the city along with
his wife, Jackie.Kennedy died as a result of his wounds, and a
historic presidency died along with him. JFK was the youngest person
ever elected president, the first and only Roman Catholic, and the
fourth to die from an assassin's bullet.

In
2003, on the 40th anniversary of the event, ABC news conducted a poll
that found 70 percent of Americans believe JFK's assassination was the
result of a conspiracy.Hundreds of books and films have come out
over the years examining every possible scenario and piece of evidence,
some claiming Lee Harvey Oswald's guilt, others his innocence. Despite
the crime having been committed 45 years ago, new evidence continues to
come to light -- some as recently as this year.Oswald, a
24-year-old worker at the Texas Schoolbook Depository, was arrested the
day Kennedy was killed and charged with killing Kennedy and a
policeman, J.D. Tippit. Oswald himself was killed two days later when
he was shot on national television in the basement of the Dallas police
headquarters by Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner with suspected ties
to organized crime. Oswald denied involvement in Kennedy and Tippit's
deaths to the end.

Even
the federal government cannot make up its mind. In 1964, the Warren
Commission, which was assigned the duty of investigating the
assassination by President Lyndon Johnson, concluded that Oswald was
the lone assassin. In 1979, the House Select Committee on
Assassinations concluded that there was a probable conspiracy and more
than one gunman.Perhaps nothing brought more attention and focus
to the JFK assassination over the past few decades than Oliver Stone's
landmark 1991 film "JFK." Featuring a star-studded cast that included
Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones and Jack Lemmon, the film chronicled the
story of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison's prosecution of
businessman Clay Shaw for participating in a conspiracy to kill Kennedy.The
film proposed the theory that Lyndon B. Johnson, the FBI, the CIA, the
Mafia and military intelligence participated in a coup d'etat to kill
Kennedy by using Oswald as the patsy. Shaw was acquitted of the charge
in 1969, but the film portrayed him as guilty. To this day Shaw is the
only person ever tried in a court of law in connection with the
assassination.The film was extremely controversial but was a box
office hit, won two Academy Awards and was nominated for Best Picture.
The film polarized critics, both for its filmmaking style and
presentation of the facts.

In the film's most memorable scene, Costner, portraying Garrison, re-enacts what has come to be called the "magic bullet"
theory, which was the cornerstone of the Warren Commission's conclusion
that Oswald acted alone. Watching the scene, it is difficult not to
conclude that the magic bullet was scientifically impossible.After
the shooting, Dallas police officers discovered a rifle that was hidden
near a windowsill of the sixth floor of the Texas Schoolbook
Depository, which overlooked Dealey Plaza. The rifle was registered to
Oswald.The assassination was captured on film by Abraham
Zapruder, and because of the time it takes to fire off a round from
Oswald's rifle, most experts agree that it would have only been
possible for three shots to have been fired from it. Conspiracy
theorists have struggled for years to prove the existence of a fourth
shot, because four shots proves a conspiracy.One shot has been
proved to have missed Kennedy's car entirely, and another was the fatal
head shot. That left one bullet to do the rest of the damage -- seven
wounds, including entrance and exit wounds -- to Kennedy and Texas Gov.
John Connelly, who was seated in front of the president.But in
2003, the theory was re-examined in the ABC documentary, "The Kennedy
Assassination: Beyond Conspiracy." In it, ABC correspondent Dale Meyers
created a digital computer simulation
of the Zapruder film within a three-dimensional, scale model of Dealey
Plaza, and was able to leave the place where Zapruder was filming and
examine the shooting from any angle.

Meyers
also noted that Connelly's seat was 3 feet lower than Kennedy's and he
was seated 6 inches more inboard. "JFK" portrays both men seated at the
same height, with Connelly directly in front of the president. Meyers
was able to draw a direct line through all of their seven wounds, which
led directly up to the sniper's nest of the sixth floor of the Texas
Schoolbook Depository.Still, many researchers continue to
believe in a conspiracy. Even if the single bullet theory is correct,
it does not mean Oswald fired it, and it does not mean another shot
didn't come from the grassy knoll. Oswald always maintained that he was
on the second floor in the lunchroom at the time of the shooting and
was seen there by a Dallas policeman 90 seconds after the shots were
fired.New pieces of possible evidence continue to be released.
In February, Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins unveiled the
contents of a safe that had been secret for more than 40 years. Inside
was clothing worn by Oswald, a leather holster belonging to Ruby and
piles of old documents.

Among
them was an alleged transcript of a recording between Oswald and Ruby
at Ruby's nightclub where they plot to kill Kennedy. Some researchers
have concluded it to be part of a movie script, and a bad one at that.
Still, the fact that it remained locked away in a safe on the 10th
floor of the Dallas County Courthouse for decades is intriguing.But
more intriguing, and less easy to dismiss, was a letter from the FBI to
the Dallas police chief stating that Ruby's sister said her family had
obtained a police report on the preparations for Kennedy's visit to
Dallas.So the hunt for evidence, and the debate about what the evidence means, continues.

For your 55th birthday, your significant puts together a magnificent Hawaiian luau bash. Your dream, as a couple, was always to go there but life piled up in front of you and, alas, you never made it. The bash winds down around 1 am after much heavy partying. You wake up, can’t find your significant anywhere, walk into the kitchen, and find this note taped to the coffee maker:

“Gone for batteries, be back in a bit, love —me”

I shake my head at his ability to function at this late hour. *He’s always been a night owl* I think I turn back towards the cabinet to put the coffee mug away, and see his wallet lying on the counter where it always is. *Odd…oh well, he’ll be back for it*, and I head back to bed.

I sit up with a jolt, reaching out towards his side of the bed, it’s cold and unwrinkled. Pulling my robe around me, I tiptoe out towards the office, hoping to find him in front of the computer. He’s not there.
“Jason?” , I ask, walking into the living room, expecting to see him asleep on the couch. Nothing. No answer, no sleeping husband.
*Where the hell is he*, I mutter to myself as I push aside the curtains to look outside. His truck is still sitting in the drive, dwarfing my car as usual.
*He’s got to be here somewhere*, I think to myself as I head towards the basement, hoping that maybe he’s tinkering around down there.
The lights in the basement are off, I reach to flick them on and nothing happens. I flick the switch on and off rapidly, calling out into the darkened area.

“Babe...you down there?” No answer. I move back in to the kitchen and grab a flashlight from the junk drawer and flick it on. Just then, I notice the red on my fingers…

A new baby--

or two.

Nope, not mine but my cousins'. Peter and Jeremy are brothers. They both just became fathers (Jerry for the second and Peter for the first time) this week.

Jerry and his wife Dena welcomed another little girl , Ana Lynn on October 10th. Peter and his wife Michelle received thier long-awaited miracle on the 14th.--Tatyana

Congratulations, guys!

Why?

I started thinking about this yesterday, and I guess the
epiphany moment for me was that "weight-loss" itself can not, IS not,
my "WHY."

My "why" has to be more tied into what I want out of
life, my longterm dreams, my goals, my aspirations in life. How can I
possibly get excited, how can I possibly dedicate myself to something
that I have not linked to the more important things I want out of life.
Yeah, I want to fit into smaller jeans, but c'mon, when I lay back on
my deathbed and think of the important things in life, am I really
going to reflect back to the day I finally fit into a pair of skinny
jeans? Maybe, but probably not.
I realized that my "WHY" are my
larger life goals, the things I want, my dreams, and that weightloss is
merely one tiny step, one tiny part of that "why." A healthy lifestyle
is merely a tool that will allow me to live longer and pursue the kind
of active lifestyle I want. And I guess what I am saying is that
somewhere along this journey I lost that perspective, and a little bit
of myself, as well. I did ultimately come to view myself as a number on
the scale and that was a measurement of success/failure that I clung
too. And it was for that number that I worked the various programs,
with the goal being to get skinny. And of course, I had other reasons
"to improve my heath" and to feel better, but I completely lost what
that meant or why it was important. Simply losing became the goal and,
honestly, a shallow, unsustainable, and hollow one. No wonder I burnt
out, no wonder I can't find dedication. If someone at the end of my
life asked, "and what did you do with your life?" and my answer was "I
lost a lot of weight," that would be really, really sad. And of course,
not true, because I was a good mother, a good friend, a good wife, a
caring person, but in terms of the goals that I set for myself and
carried out, if losing was my only goal, I would not be satisfied,
because losing weight in and of itself is simply not enough of a "why."

Getting
skinny is not going to take me to my goals and dreams, but it is a step
towards them, not something I am simply doing for getting skinny's
sake. At the same time, that being said, there are a lot of other
steps/transformations that I need to be doing at the same time I am
working my towards my weightloss goals. My weightloss is not my
lifelong dream, it is a step towards the kind of life I want, but that
life is not going to be magically waiting there for me once I hit goal.
Larger dissatisfactions are not just going to melt away cause I am
skinny. Shaky relationships are not going to miraculously improve just
cause I got skinny. My self esteem is not going to magically improve
because I am skinny (it may improve some, but so far, it hasn't). It
just isn't.

So, I have decided to go about this weightloss thing
from a slightly different angle, not as a goal in and of itself, but as
a step towards the larger things I want out of life.

My "WHY" is
ultimately to be able to live the kind of life that I want to lead. I
want to lead an active, fit lifestyle so that I don't ever feel my age.
I want to be spared the kind of health problems my mom has. I want to
be happy and proud of myself.

Anyway, I am not sure that this makes sense to anyone outside my head. But I wanted to write it down for myself and share it...

Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day

 

Mental Illness Awareness Week

Mental Illness Awareness Week is October
5-11. That same week, our presidential candidates will hold a “town
hall” debate—in which up to a quarter of the audience are likely to have
experienced a mental illness.

That’s because one in four
adults lives with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental illnesses every year. That’s almost 60
million Americans.

Mental illness does not
discriminate between Republicans and Democrats. It can strike anyone at any
time.

Mental health is part of health care and it is essential
that it be included in the nation’s health care reform debate.

Mental illness affects children. It affects people of color.
Two million Americans live with schizophrenia—twice the number of those with
HIV/AIDS. One in five veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan—almost 300,000
troops—will experience major depression or PTSD upon returning home. Unfortunately,
two-thirds of people who live with mental illnesses do not receive treatment.

But treatment works. Recovery is possible. Between now and
Election Day, every candidate needs to talk about these facts.

I am the one in many
people's lives who provides them with their basic human needs. What others may
take for granted - washing, dressing, bathing, eating - some people are unable
to perform these tasks and they depend on me. I am the one who goes to great
lengths to maintain their privacy and dignity while helping them do things that
many others are able to do on their own. I am the one they rage at, venting
their frustration, anger, confusion and fear. I am the one who performs care,
even though doing so will often put me in the position of being physically and
verbally abused at the hands of those I care for.

I am the one who rides out the storms of my resident’s emotions right alongside
of them. I am the one who searches high and low throughout the building for a
misplaced item that one of my residents is desperately looking for. I am the
one who hears "I want to leave" from the lips of my residents
sometimes several times a night, and comforts them the best way I know how. I
am the one offering hugs and smiles in a dark and lonely world, where many
times, the staff becomes the only family a resident has. I become their source
of love, acceptance and friendship. I am the one who tries to quell loneliness
and depression in the people I care for, sometimes resorting to singing,
sometimes just acting silly to coax a smile. I am the one who makes them know
that someone still cares about them.

I am the one who listens when no one else listens. I listen as my residents
repeat stories from their past over and over again, and offer my words of
amazement or encouragement over their accomplishments and memories. I am the
one who validates them as a person, who ensures they know they still have great
worth as a human being, even though they are mentally ill and their lives have
changed, I always try to offer hope where it is needed.

This is why I do what I do. Does your job offer that satisfaction?

Soccer update

Well, we've have two games and we've tied one and won one. The girls are learning to play well together at the games, but during practices all they do is fight about who goes first or what color ball they get. I actually had to make three girls run laps because of fighting tonight. The parents are handling themselves as well for the most part, but I had to talk to a grandmother at the game on Saturday because she yelled across the field after the game "You lose, suckas". I was so shocked! How immature can you be at 76?

I am from the post, the base, the naval air station with gate and locks and closures and incongruent welcoming arms.

I am from the spenders-of-money and the constant huggers.

Applying for a supervisory position at work

It's pretty much the same thing I do now, but with more managerial duties.

Thinking about going back to school

Thinking about going back to school and getting my liberal arts degree as a BA and then putting that towards a masters in Psychology.

Dunno though.

Getting ready for practice

In the course of getting ready for my first practice with the girls, it has come to my attention that one must have a game plan:

1. Warm-up until everyone arrives (5 minutes)


2. Ballnastics (10 minutes)


3. Throw in practice (10 minutes)


4. Small-sided activity (3v3 with goalies) (15 minutes)


5. Cool down (5 minutes)

Lets see how well I can stick to the plan!

ETA:

Well, it didn't go that bad. We did some warmup running for a while, and then practiced stopping on the whistle with a red light/green light dribbling game. After that we practiced passing to each other and communicating with our team mates by calling their names when passing to them. I hold no illusions that they are ready for their first game on Saturday, but we are gonna have fun.

To Parents of the U7 Sparrow Players:

Thank you for allowing your child to play youth soccer this year (why the crap did so many of you sign up?). I look forward to meeting all of the parents. I am extremely excited about helping your child expand their understanding of the great game of soccer! As their coach, my first emphasis will be on what I call FUNdamentals. I will work with your child to further develop their fundamental skills and hopefully we will have a lot of FUN learning together( I have no idea what I am doing, please don't expect me to train your kid to be the next Reynaldo)

I require that each child be respectful. Respectful to me, fellow players, opponents, officials and those they come in contact with throughout the season.(Please don't let your kids be brats, mmmkay?) I believe it is important to develop an early understanding of sportsmanship and teamwork. (this also means you can't be a total dumb ass on the sidelines, either) My focus is to teach and grow as players, not win. We will win as a team and lose as a team. I hope that you also share this philosophy and will discuss and emphasize these concepts with your children throughout the season.(See above statement about not know what the crap I am doing)

This is my first year coaching and my second year in the club. This is a very supportive and fun-loving club and I’m extremely excited to be learning with your children. (Again..I have no freaking clue how to coach)

Team Roster
We are the Sparrows and will be playing in the U7 Girls divison of the Belleuve Soccer Club. Attached is the team roster, we currently have 8 players on our team.  (please don't ask me halfway into the season what our team name is..or who the other kids are)

Practice and Game Schedule
Attached is the practice schedule. Games have already been scheduled. Please note our first practice on Wednesday August 27th at 6:30pm at Anderson Grove Elementary North Field (see address below). All practices after that will be on Mondays. At least one parent per child should plan to attend the first practice as there will be a brief orientation and I would like to be able to meet you all to learn about your children and how I can best help them grow as soccer players. (Please don't lose this schedule, Don't call me about when the practices are scheduled as I am going to promptly forget myself.)

Snack Schedule:

Attached is the snack schedule. We will be rotating the snack duties throughout the players each week so that no one person is responsible for every game. In the past, we generally have had one family bring orange slices at half time and another family bring the snacks/drinks for after the game. Ideas for good snacks are granola bars or a cold/frozen snack (popsicle/ice cream bars) to help them cool down and some sort of juice box type drink. (This you will have a turn to provide snacks, don't be a douche and stay home that game either)

Also enclosed are some ideas for our team parent(s) to look at in order to order our team trophies and team pictures. There is also a flyer about team parties for you to look at. Volunteers to help with this are greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you can take over one of these projects. (FYI, if you don't volunteer, kids won't get tropies or pictures. Don't be a douche)

Please don’t forget to bring your cleats, shin guards and a full water bottle to all the practices and games. I will be handing out team shirts and socks at the first practice and will be collecting the shirts at the last game of the season. (I know about 50% of you will forget..so I am going to bring extra bottles of water and shin guards..)

This series will focus on my lack of knowledge about the game of soccer and how I manage to deal with 8 little girls (7 and under) and 8 sets of parents who think they know best. Strength, Courage and Wisdom

In my life, I have constantly been trying to please someone else-- my teachers, my employers, my family, my friends, the world in general—but now, I want to please me. If my attitude, or my figure or my mentality bothers you, I’m done apologizing. Get over it. I’ve found the “Strength, Courage and Wisdom” that has been inside of me, and I am finally accepting myself for who and what I am. I don’t ask you to do the same; I just ask that you respect my decision.

I think I am finally at a place in my life where I am comfortable in my skin, and at peace with myself. I think that my being at peace makes others uncomfortable, in that because they find fault with the way I look or the way I act and think, that I should as well.

If at some point in the future, I feel the need to diet myself down to my high school weight, I will; but it won’t be because of someone constantly poking my stomach or the “When was the last time you went to the gym?”, or the “Wow, If I ate that, it’d go right to my thighs”. It would be because I wanted to, and right now, at this very moment in my life; I don’t want to. I love the fact that my body has given birth to three children, and the fact that it looks it. I love the stretch marks, the mommy lap and the added cleavage that my extra pounds give me.

I am a fickle person. I own that. I change my mind constantly, and you know what?? It’s ok! I can do that. I don’t have to stay on one course forever. I can add spice and flair to my life, if I decide to. Just because I liked computers and gaming last year, doesn’t mean that I like it today. Just because I love shopping, and fashion and beautiful things today, doesn’t mean that I will next year. The ability to change your mind, your passions, and your desires is a truly amazing gift, which I put to good use.

I have dreams. Most are unrealized but I have them nonetheless. I want to write, to travel, to teach, to learn, to craft, to relax, to breathe. Some days, I want to do one more than another, but eventually I will get to them all. Just because your path lead you straight and directly to your dreams, doesn’t mean that mine will. Asking me what I want to do with my life doesn’t help. I don’t know yet, and I think that is ok too. I don’t know today, but I might tomorrow. I thought I knew a year ago, but it’s changed. I don’t mind.

My spirituality is my own. I don’t care what or if you believe, honestly. I am finding my own way. I don’t want your opinion, your guidance or your “prayers”. I will find what rings true for me, and when I do I won’t subject you to it. Spirituality is a personal thing.

NE smoking law to go into effect...

I am facing this issue at work. Do we make a residential facility smoking or non smoking? Does one persons right to smoke supersede another's right to clean air? This is a copy of my email to my director.

My thoughts on the smoking issue are as follows:

There is no constitutional right to smoke. Claims to the contrary have no legal
basis. The U.S. constitution guarantees certain fundamental rights and protects
certain classes of persons from all but the most compelling government regulation. However, no court has ever recognized smoking as a protected fundamental right nor has any court ever found smokers to be a protected class. To the contrary, every court that has considered the issue has declared that no fundamental right to smoke exists. When employees smoke at work, the smoke causes damage to the facilities, and the employer is faced with the increased possibility of fires and burns, extra cleaning and maintenance, and more air pollution. The health effects of tobacco smoke on nonsmokers are well documented; in 1986, the Surgeon General reported on the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke,concluding that nonsmokers who are exposed to cigarette smoke run an increased
risk of acquiring lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. In addition,
the Surgeon General concluded that although the separation of smokers and
nonsmokers within the same air space may reduce the exposure of nonsmokers to
environmental tobacco smoke, it does not eliminate it.

I took a look at a copy of the law (LB395)and it states that the new law is intended to “encourage smoke-free places of employment and public places to reduce the health and safety risks posed by smoking in such places. . . protect the public health and welfare and to recognize that the need to breathe smoke-free air has priority over the desire to smoke.”. I think that in order for us to be compliant in the full spirit of the law, we need to recognize the fact that while we are a residential facility and therefore technically fall under the private residence consideration, we are also a place of employment and that the employees/residents who don't smoke shouldn't be put at risk. I enjoy the way that Sen. Ernie Chambers stated it. “You do not have the right to have an addiction and impose your weakness upon other people,You don’t have the right to impose your stupidity on others.”.

Absence really does make the heart grow fonder--

I can't believe how much I miss Jason. It's hard for me to admit when I need someone, but I honestly need him here to keep myself grounded. He has always been there to pick up the slack for me when I am down and just need time to myself and since he's been gone, I haven't had anyone around to do that. I hate the holes that are left when he is gone--his companionship, the easy rapport, the way he laughs at my goofyness or encourages my spirits or simply the way he looks when he says my name.

His absence makes me realize that I need to let him know how much I appreciate and adore him when he is here, so that he know honestly how much I do love him and how much I do need him even after 10 years.

Busy B?

I've been so preoccupied with work that I really haven't had a chance to update here in quite some time! The next month or so is going to continue on in that same vein so please don't expect anything with any sort of regularity.

Work has been a challenging-headache-inducing-heart wrenching-belly laugh causing time! The residents come up with new thing everyday and I'm already seeing them begin to grow and come out of their shells.

Mo--you asked about my book reviews: I really haven't read anything that isn't work related in a month!
